  • Subtract the value of these exemptions from the gross income calculated in Step 1.
  • Remember, TDS is a tax on salary that is applied on your annual taxable income. To determine this, multiply the figure from Step 3 by 12.
  • To this figure, add any other sources of income you may have such as rent or interest earnings.
  • The next step is to factor in your investments that fall under Chapter VI-A and calculate the amount of deductions that apply. For example, to save income tax in India, you can avail an exemption of up to Rs. 1.5 lakh on premium payments towards your term insurance policy.
  • Subtract the Step 6 figure from the figure resulting after Step 5.
