  5. The investment must be made within a month of receiving retirement benefits.

What is the Maturity Period of Senior Citizen Savings Scheme?

A Senior Citizen Savings Scheme matures 5 years of its activation. However, the account holder has an option to extend the account for up to 3 years. The request has been made within one year of the SCSS maturity date. You may want to withdraw your Senior Citizen Savings Scheme account after one year of activating it. However, this leads to penalties. These penalties depend on the time of withdrawal.

1. 2 Year Period - If you leave the program before the two-year period has passed a penalty of 5% of your deposit will be deducted as a penalty.

2. 2 to 5 Years Period - If you leave the scheme between 2 and 5 years after starting your account, you will be charged 1% of your SCSS deposit as a penalty.

The account will be closed if the primary account holder dies before the account's actual maturity date, and any maturity proceeds will be handed to the legal heir/nominee. For deceased claims, the nominee or legal heir must submit a formal application in the prescribed format, along with a copy of the death certificate, for the account to be closed.
